The Cost of AI-Generated Website Copy: You Sound Just Like Your Competitor

a mug beside a laptop

After more than 30 years writing everything from news articles to website copy and business materials, I’ve noticed something about AI-generated content:

It often sounds professional, but it rarely sounds distinctive.

I see the same words, phrasing, and rhythms. I recognize the same polished messaging that sounds impressive at first glance, but says very little.

And nowhere is this more visible than on business websites.

It’s easy to understand why business owners are drawn to AI-generated website content. It’s fast. It seems professional. It looks “done.”

But here’s the problem: if you simply copy and paste straight from an AI tool like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, you now sound like lots of other businesses (including, in some cases, your direct competitors).

The Problem With Pattern-Based Writing

AI is trained on enormous amounts of publicly available content. When you prompt it to write website copy, it draws from patterns it has seen repeatedly, producing a predictable result:

  • It favors familiar phrasing over specificity.
  • It defaults to language that sounds professional rather than language that means something specific.
  • It avoids risk because it is optimized for coherence, not differentiation.

The problem is that “coherent” copy is not the same as “compelling” copy.

And “professional-sounding” is not the same as “persuasive.”

AI also doesn’t know your customers. It doesn’t know the nuance of your work. It doesn’t know how your business actually makes a difference.

So you get a broad brush stroke with:

  • Broad claims (innovative, trusted, comprehensive)
  • Safe positioning (helping, supporting, delivering)
  • Abstract outcomes (growth, excellence, success)

None of this will sink you. But it won’t make anyone stop and read, either.

The Difference is Obvious

What happens when you replace broad AI-generated website copy with copy rooted in actual outcomes, real services, and genuine customer concerns?

Here’s how it changes the entire perception:

Generic vs. Specific

The right column works because it replaces vague claims with specific evidence, outcomes, experience, and customer concerns. It sounds like it came from an actual business that understands its customers.

AI Is a Starting Point, Not a Finish Line

AI can be a useful tool for getting words on the page. But there’s a critical gap between starting with AI and finishing with it.

Closing that gap requires something AI can’t generate on its own:

  • A distinct point of view
  • Specific knowledge of your business and customers
  • Copy shaped by someone who understands the difference between filling space and building trust

In a marketplace filled with AI-generated sameness, that level of specificity becomes a genuine competitive advantage.

Read your homepage out loud. Does it sound like you, or like everyone else?

If you could lift that copy and paste it onto a competitor’s website without changing a word, that’s worth fixing.

Even a few targeted changes can make your business more memorable and credible.
